Ethics – Character & Conflict

Alan FerreBrett EarleLia de SousaPauline Skinner

So, who likes being the banker in Monopoly? If you’re anything like most households, you’ll either vote for the one most trusted, or the one who’s best at wheeling and dealing.  It truly is a game that varies your emotional experience, to say the least. When it comes to business though, you need to make the right decision and ensure your client’s experience isn’t left to chance. Each positive action between you, your staff and your client adds credit to you and your OC’s community chest, building trust, integrity and credibility. A collection of negative experiences can bring your game abruptly to an end. In this session we look more closely at who and what those deals look like.  Handover  Commissions  Tendering

Privacy – For your protection or mine

Scott Schwartz
Our world as we know it is changing. In our strata landscape this includes the way we engage, service and communicate with clients. In this session we focus on the way we manage our clients’ records and ask Are your current practises changing with the time? Or are you leaving yourself exposed?  What would a data breach mean to your Contract of Appointment, to your business, to your industry?  It’s no longer a conversation for the future or a 13% chance that it may occur. It is already happening. We’ve seen ransomware attacks, auctioning off of distribution lists and even documents intended for the waste not being wisely disposed of.

Bullying – Recognition and Responsibilities

Alexandra SzandurskiLyndal Grant
In my day, bullying built character…. but times have changed and rightly so. We now stand up and say No Way, Not on My Watch or do we? Do we really?
Our strata industry is fraught with personalities and like families, not necessarily all the ones we’d choose, or grow to love. We know that bullying could occur in your offices, side by side or even top down, but do we recognise it or call it out? What about what we hear, see or may be easier to overlook in the relationship between our staff and our clients?  This session identifies your legislated responsibilities as business owners to create a working environment that is free of bullying and that constitutes a safe, respectful and inclusive work environment that your staff can bank on.

The Strata Community in a Post-COVID World

Keith Suter AM

Never before have governments closed down whole economies (not even in wartime). This presentation will look at the central role that housing plays in Australia and why it will be an important feature of the economic recovery in the Post-COVID World. The presentation will then look at how the reinvention of work and working from home (alongside other technological developments) will change Australia’s housing needs.

Bullying – Prevention & Management

Mark Rademaker

It’s not an issue until it’s an issue and by then it’s often too late. So let’s prepare now and talk about how to overcome bullying. It’s a sad fact of life that bullying behaviour can happen anywhere, anytime with detrimental impact. Sometimes we bear witness to a one off occasion, but more often than not in our strata environment, it’s an ongoing misuse of power to intentionally manipulate, intimidate or dominate; physically, verbally or socially.

In this session we delve deeper into bullying in your owners corporations themselves: committee members, lot owners, building management staff and contractors. We zone in on your position as a Strata Manager and your authority and position of influence, to drive out such bullying behaviour with programmed learning.

Changing the game with streamed sessions

During this period, two sessions will be offered. You can choose to attend the session of your choice.

Online meetings – The know how

Julie McLeanMatthew LarwoodRochelle CastroScott Allen

The question remains – Can you run a valid meeting electronically under the current provisions of the Owners Corporations Act 2006? The inability to have face-to-face meetings has been one of the biggest game changers we’ve seen this year for the strata industry. With varying practices it’s safe to say one size doesn’t fit all. Attend this session to find out which peg goes into which hole and how to make the virtual experience work for you.

Sponsored by The Scotia Group

Debt Recovery – Facing finances in Lockdown

Gerard BrodyJenny WangSteve Danne

The questions yet to come – Sources say we’re yet to see the real impact of the projected financial impact on Victorian’s as a result of the current pandemic. So how do you prepare for what may lie ahead? Build your blocks to form a strong foundation and incorporate strategies to ensure that should any blocks be removed, your tower won’t fall.  Attend this session to set in place policies to balance the current and long-term needs of your strata clients and their building assets.

10:30am - 11:00am

Morning Tea Break - Playing the Game

Make the most of this opportunity to grab your cuppa and return to connect with sponsors for your chance to go into the prize draws, access the expert resources made available to you during the event and simply get networking with sponsors and fellow peers.

11:00am - 11:35am

Reading Plans – What the vinculum is that?

Andrew Whitelaw

What do strata plans and Victorian’s have in common? We’re all limited by boundaries. Although hopefully that changes soon for us Victorians! When it comes to plans of strata, subdivision and the like, understanding how to interpret them is fundamental knowledge for anyone working, living or owning in strata. Whether you’re yet to learn this skill or have it mastered, this session is bound to intrigue. Join Andrew as he shares case studies that will have us all perplexed. Providing practical examples to open our eyes to the impact of design.

Take assured steps on your path to improve the efficiency of your building’s life safety systems. Join our guest panellists for a closer look at the current building legislative environment, its practical application and how to play your part in upping the game. A not to be missed session that’s to present confronting truths about alarming building conditions, as well as how the property sector is pulling together to make a difference and change the game, a game worth changing.

Security – Being security minded

Anton BlockDarrell TrebleGlenn McFarlaneKingsley Osmond

Did you know that subconsciously our homes are a place of security for us all? That’s why we come home to relax, lulling ourselves sometimes, into a false sense of security. Well that’s the case for many of your lot owners too. It therefore needs to be a conscious decision to have those risks assessed, reducing the ‘false sense’ and increasing to ‘a real sense’ of protection. In this session we bring a myriad of commonly asked questions to the table, to help you guide your owners corporations in their quest to know and protect themselves and their rights.

1:00pm - 2:00pm

Equal Opportunity – Are rights in OCs really equal?

Tim Graham

Well let’s just say, when opportunity knocks, we don’t always arrive at the same time to answer. Rightly or wrongly, we’re seeing this more and more in our strata environment. The result is an increase in conflicts, disputes, breaches, VCAT Decisions and Court Orders. You will hear a diverse range of case studies to help you better understand and take heed as to how laws are more frequently being applied to owners corporations and clarifying their obligations. Occupational Health & Safety – Understanding Risks and Responsibilities

Fabio CorelliLouisa HerbertMark LipshutzRobert Kelly

It goes without saying that you can’t manage a risk you don’t recognise. Although it’s also known that ignorance is not an excuse. So just what is the responsibility of the Strata Manager, the Owners Corporations, their employee or contractor when it comes to managing the risks when moving about and/or working on common property?

These concerns together with the new manslaughter laws, have raised many questions in recent times. It’s therefore timely and important to revisit the question of OH&S and OCs. Stay up to date and join our panel for some discussions that will ensure you lead your client’s down the sure footed path.
